The best podcast interviews feel like great conversations—not interrogations.
An interview isn’t just a list of questions—it’s a chance to connect, explore, and uncover moments your listeners will remember. But that only happens if you prepare well and stay present enough to respond naturally.
Today’s two exercises will help you sharpen your interviewing instincts so you can lead conversations that flow.
Exercise 1: Guest Prep Improv
Skill: Interview preparation & curiosity
Pick a real or fictional person you’d love to interview. Without looking anything up, come up with five open-ended questions that could lead to great stories or insights.
Pro tip: For each question, think of one possible follow-up you could ask based on a likely answer.
Why it works: Trains you to think of questions that go beyond surface-level—and builds flexibility for when the conversation takes unexpected turns.
Exercise 2: Reaction Practice
Skill: Active listening & follow-up
Find a short (2–3 minute) interview clip on YouTube or a podcast. Pause after the guest’s answer. Imagine you’re the host—what would you say next?
- Would you ask a clarifying question?
- Would you ask for a story?
- Would you reflect on what they just said?
Pro tip: Repeat with different clips to practise adapting to different tones and personalities.
Why it works: Keeps you present in the moment, ready to respond with curiosity instead of jumping to the next question.
Your Turn
Use these exercises before your next interview or guest appearance. You’ll not only sound more prepared—you’ll make your guest feel heard and your listeners feel engaged.
