Speak with Purpose – How to Reduce Filler Words and Sharpen Your Message

Clarity isn’t about speaking more—it’s about saying the right things in the right way.

One of the quickest ways to lose your listener’s attention? Rambling, overexplaining, or filling sentences with “ums,” “likes,” and “you knows.”

Speaking with purpose is about knowing what you want to say, and delivering it with confidence and focus. Today’s two exercises will help you sound more polished—without sounding scripted.

Exercise 1: Elevator Pitch Drill

Skill: Clarity & confidence

Imagine someone asks: “What’s your podcast about?” Practise answering in 30 seconds or less.

Focus on being:

  • Clear – no jargon or vague terms
  • Concise – only the most important points
  • Memorable – something they’ll remember and want to share

Pro tip: Create two versions—one for someone in your industry and one for someone brand new to podcasting.

Why it works: When you can talk about your podcast confidently in 30 seconds, you can introduce it naturally anywhere—networking events, guest appearances, even casual chats.

Exercise 2: The “No Filler” Game

Skill: Smooth, confident delivery

Pick a topic you know well—a hobby, a recent experience, or your podcast’s theme. Speak for 2 minutes straight without saying:

  • “um”
  • “like”
  • “you know”
  • “basically”

Pro tip: Record yourself and play it back. Listen for any sneaky filler words you didn’t realise you were using.

Why it works: Cutting out filler words instantly makes you sound more confident and in control—even when you’re thinking on your feet.

Your Turn

Today, give each exercise a go. Notice how being more intentional changes not just what you say, but how you say it.
