Using Podcasting to Grow Your Business

Lessons from my conversation on HR Voices

Recently, I had the pleasure of joining Mary Asante on HR Voices — this time stepping from behind the scenes (where I support with editing the show) into the guest seat. HR Voices is a podcast created for independent HR consultants and people professionals who want practical, reflective insight they can apply in their day-to-day work. Mary has built the show around clarity and action, and that tone shaped our entire conversation. While the podcast is aimed at HR consultants, the lessons we discussed apply to any service-based business owner.

Podcasting as a Strategic Tool

One of the biggest misconceptions about podcasting is that it’s simply another marketing channel. In reality, when positioned correctly, it becomes a strategic tool. We explored how podcasting has evolved beyond purely audio. There’s the traditional audio-first show, but there’s also podcast content — clips, transcripts, blogs, newsletters and social media posts that stem from one conversation. When your podcast sits at the centre of your content strategy, it fuels everything else. If it sits on top as an optional extra, it’s usually the first thing to disappear when you’re busy.

The Power of Format and Consistency

We also discussed the importance of format. A sustainable show doesn’t rely on one structure. Possible formats include:

Listening Is the Real Skill

Another theme was listening. Many new hosts focus heavily on preparing questions. But great podcasting — and great consultancy — comes from active listening. When you listen properly, you ask better follow-ups, uncover stronger insights and create more natural conversations. This skill extends beyond the microphone. It improves client meetings, workshops and strategic discussions.

Where AI Fits

We also touched on AI in podcast production. AI can support efficiency — from generating transcripts to helping repurpose content — but it should never replace genuine insight. Technology can streamline the process. Your voice, thinking and lived experience are what build authority and connection.

The Three Key Takeaways

To summarise, here are the three main lessons I shared on the episode:

Podcasting isn’t about adding noise to your marketing. It’s about creating meaningful conversations that position you as a trusted voice.

Thank you again to Mary Asante for the invitation and for leading such a thoughtful discussion on HR Voices. You can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever else you enjoy podcasts! — and if you’re exploring how podcasting could support your business, I’d love to continue the conversation.
